About Boundary Bay Regional Park

Boundary Bay Regional Park sits on the shores of Boundary Bay, a large estuarine bay forming part of the Canada–United States border along the southern edge of Delta, British Columbia. The park covers varied landscapes including sandy beaches, salt marshes, mudflats, and grassy uplands. It is a key habitat for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl, making it a vital stopover on the Pacific Flyway. The tidal flats and marshes provide rich feeding grounds for species like sandpipers, herons, and eagles, attracting birdwatchers and naturalists throughout the year. The park features several kilometers of relatively flat trails ideal for walking, running, and cycling, as well as picnic areas and beach access points popular for kayaking and paddleboarding. Its proximity to Vancouver and nearby communities makes it a favored spot for urban residents seeking coastal nature experiences. Historically, the area was used by Indigenous peoples and later supported small-scale farming and dike construction to protect farmland from tidal flooding. Today, Boundary Bay Regional Park balances conservation efforts with recreational use, maintaining ecological health and public enjoyment. Visitors appreciate the panoramic views over the bay, especially at sunset. Interpretive signage highlights the importance of the park’s ecosystems and species. The park’s diverse environments and close proximity to Metro Vancouver serve as important natural refuge and outdoor recreation area within an increasingly urbanized region.
